Φέτος τιμούμε την επέτειο 80 χρόνων από τη Μάχη της Κρήτης, ενός γεγονότος ύψιστης σημασίας τόσο για τη συμμετοχή της Ελλάδας ως κράτους στον πόλεμο κατά του Άξονα όσο και για τη συμμετοχή του ελληνικού λαού στην Αντίσταση κατά του ναζισμού και του φασισμού. Τιμούμε τους αγώνες του ελληνικού στρατού αι των συμμαχικών στρατευμάτων στη Μάχη της Κρήτης, τη λαϊκή συμμετοχή ενάντια στη φασιστική επίθεση, την Αντίσταση σε όλη τη διάρκεια της μακράς κατοχής του νησιού. Τιμούμε ακόμα το φρόνημα του κρητικού λαού στον αγώνα για επιβίωση με αξιοπρέπεια παρά τα σχέδια εξανδραποδισμού του από τη ναζιστική ιδεολογία και πρακτική που χώριζε τους ανθρώπους σε ανώτερους και κατώτερους, που εκμηδένιζε την αξία της ανθρώπινης ζωής. Η Κρήτη μπήκε στον πόλεμο με τραυματικό τρόπο πριν τη γερμανική επίθεση και κατάκτηση. Η Μεραρχία Κρήτης στάλθηκε στο μέτωπο του Ελληνοϊταλικού πολέμου πολύ μετά την έναρξη των επιχειρήσεων -στη χειρότερη στιγμή- καθώς πήρε αμέσως μέρος σε σκληρές μάχες στην περιοχή του Τεπελενίου και είχε μεγάλες απώλειες. This year we are commemorating the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Crete, an event of the utmost importance, as regards both the participation of Greece as a country in the war against the Axis, and the participation of the Greek people in the struggle against Nazism and Fascism. We commemorate the struggles of the Greek Army and the Allied forces in the Battle of Crete, the popular participation against the fascist attack, the Resistance throughout the long years of occupation. We also commemorate the spirit of the Cretan people in the fight for survival with dignity, despite the plans to enslave them in accordance with Nazi ideology and practice, which divided people into superior and inferior, regarding human life as worthless. Crete had already entered the war in a traumatic way before the German attack and conquest of the island. The Cretan V Division was sent to the Albanian front of the Greco-Italian War long after the start of the campaign, at the worst possible moment, suffering heavy losses in the bitter fighting around Tepelene. Dieses Jahrehren wirden 80.Jahrestag des Kampfes um Kreta, einem Ereignis von hochster Bedeutung sowohl fur dieTeilnahrne Griechenlands als Staat am Krieg gegen die Achsenmachte wie auch furdieTeilnahme des griechischen Volkes am Widerstand gegen den Nationalsozialismus und den Faschismus. Wir ehren die Kampfe der griechischen und der alliierten Truppen beim Kampf um Kreta, die Mitwirkung des Volkes gegen den faschistischen Angriff, den Widerstand wahrend der gesamten Dauer der Besetzung der Insel. Auch ehren wir die wurdevolle Gesinnung des kretischen Volkes beim Kampf ums Uberleben, trotz der Plane zu seiner Versklavung durch die nationalsozialistischen Ideologien und Praxen, die die Menschen in Ober- und Untermenschen trennte und den Wert des menschlichen Lebens austilgte. Kreta trat bereits vor der deutschen Offensive und Besetzung auf traumatische Art in den Krieg ein.
Die Kreta-Division wurde erst lange nach Beginn der Operationen -im schwierigsten Moment- an die Front des griechisch-italienischen Krieges geschickt, wo sie sofort an heftigen Schlachten in der Gegend von Tepelena
teilnahm und schwere Verluste erlitt.
